Teeth Whitening
Everybody wants a bright, white smile and there are a variety of tooth whitening products and procedures available to help you improve the look of yours. Many people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from brushing twice a day and regular cleanings by the Dental Hygienist. If you want to go beyond this and make your smile look brighter and whiter, you should be aware of all of the options available.
You can take several approaches to whiten your teeth:
- Laser Tooth Whitening is done by a dentist, usually in one visit. This has the advantage of convenience but Laser Tooth Whitening can cause tooth sensitivity. Also, research indicates that Laser Tooth Whitening may not be as long-lasting as At-Home Tooth Whitening.
- At-Home Tooth Whitening is a more gentle, gradual way to whiten teeth. For most people, it produces a longer-lasting result with fewer tooth-sensitivity problems than Laser Tooth Whitening. With At-Home Tooth Whitening, the dentist makes a custom-fit cover for your teeth into which you place a tooth-whitening gel for a short time each day for a few weeks.
- Whitening Toothpastes.

What should you ask your dentist?
You should start by speaking with your dentist who will tell you whether tooth whitening might be effective for you. Tooth Whiteners may not correct all types of discolouration. Tooth Whitening may not enhance your smile if you have had bonding or tooth-coloured fillings placed in your front teeth. Tooth Whitening will not change the colour of fillngs, veneers, crowns so that they may end up standing out in your newly-whitened smile. In such circumstances the filling, veneers, crowns can be changed to match your new, white smile.
